The competition will take place on 24 September 2009, National Braai Day.

There are two categories:
Traditional

So this is where you haul out your Ouma's best resep, hap vir hap die beste in die weste. It means kaas en tamaties, lekker gemix soos ons taal. You can add home-made chutney or mayo, but nothing fensie like sundried tomatoes or blou kaas. You can use your own spices, but it has to be built on top of the basics. Kaas. Tamaties. Uie. Braai en latwaai!

Freestyle

It’s a dichotomy like that beautiful Afrikaans expression "Ja-nee". It’s a braaibroodjie with a twist. Take white bread and add onion marmalade. Herb mayo. Balsamic glaze. A runny brie. Marinated aubergine. Organic sunripened tomatoes. You get the picture. It’s the yuppy younger wannabe braaibroodjie we all wannabe. Its a bietjie Nigella en Jamie Oliver but still ordentlik enough for Tolla van der Merwe to sink his teeth into. Kappit uit.

The Judges

We tracked down the Hoff in LA, thinking he could star in our local version of Braaiwatch but he said he didn't understand the Afrikaans obsession with carbs.

So now we bring you, the one and only…
Snacks Botha
Ollie le Roux
Riaan Cruywagen
Edith Venter
Charlize Theron

They are ridiculously under-qualified but they know a good braaibroodjie when they see one.
